Breakdown

With over 50,000 views and 2,000 + likes, this video quickly became one of my favorite projects of the year. I directed, shot, and edited the piece (with the exception of the in-game action which was shot by the entire JMU Athletics Creative Services team, including some of my own shots).

Created for Parents Weekend and one of our first home games of the season, my goal was to break away from the typical hype video structure. Instead of the usual warmups, coach locker room soundbite, action sequence format, I wanted to tell a story that captured the “buzz” building across Harrisonburg, Virginia before a big game.

I used audio layering as the foundation of the narrative: phone calls, news reports, radio commentary, and finally a message from Coach Bob Chesney coming from a TV, all weaving together to highlight the energy of our fans. By following a single fan as the story’s thread, the video celebrates both the team’s success and the electric atmosphere they play in.

This was a project I had a lot of fun directing, and one I’m truly proud to showcase in my portfolio.
